SOUTH BOUND BROOK -- Alternatives, Inc. will hold a community open house Thursday, Aug. 13, from 2-4 p.m. at its Transitional Housing Program located on Charlotte Ave. A non-profit social service agency for people with a wide range of special needs, Alternatives provides homeless individuals with comprehensive residential and support services for approximately 12 months through the Transitional Housing Program.
The Charlotte Avenue facility provides services for between six and nine people who were homeless. Services include assistance with daily living skills, home and personal safety, community living, recreation, and financial management; supportive counseling; employment assistance; community service linkages; housing location services to transition into permanent living; facilitation of available rental assistance application; and Emergency On-Call services for crisis management. Once residents complete the program, Alternatives staff provides ongoing support and counseling services.
Current residents of the program will attend the open house with members of Alternatives management and direct care staff along with other invited guests. Visitors are invited to tour the home, meet residents and learn more about the Transitional Housing program.
"By coordinating services under one roof, the Transitional Housing Program is able to address the needs of the total person and provide skill training that will carry through into independent living," said Alternatives President Nancy Good. "The program directs services towards housing, enhancing mental health, daily living skills, career training, and transportation.
Throughout an individual's stay we continually work with them to reach the next step, which is full community integration."
Alternatives also operates a Transitional Housing Program in Somerset for homeless mothers and their children who are moving out of shelters and back into the community.
Based in Raritan, Alternatives provides residential, employment, and support services to individuals with developmental disabilities, mental health diagnoses and other special needs. The agency provides services in Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth and Warren Counties.
